80GB PS3 heads to rAge

Ster-Kinekor will introduce the 80GB PlayStation 3 console at the rAge Expo, in October.

The new console will replace the current next-generation console that has been trailing the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 in the local next-generation console war.

Ster-Kinekor/PlayStation marketing manager Yvonne Truter says the 60GB PlayStation 3 will be dropped in favour of the 80GB model that will be formally launched during the rAge conference.

"During the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), in Los Angeles, PlayStation brought out an 80GB model and said there will be no more 60GB PS3s. We will be launching the 80GB model during rAge," says Truter.

The E3 Web site states the 80GB PS3 retails for $399 (R3 060.53), a considerable drop from the $499 (R3 827.70) the 60GB console used to cost. Truter would not say how much the new model would cost and whether the 80GB model will be cheaper than the 60GB, which retails for R5 699.

GFK consultant Roger Carbonell says local sales of Sony`s PS3 have reached more than 40 000 units, compared with the Wii, which has moved more than 45 000 units, and Microsoft`s Xbox 360 which has sold 65 000 units since its launch in 2006.

Tide Media marketing and promotions manager Jacqui Jacobs says she is not aware of any new consoles that are being launched at this year`s rAge Expo. "Yet we do not dictate to our exhibitors what to showcase. rAge is intended to grow the awareness and interest in gaming as a whole.
