London Stock Exchange-listed Dimension Data's Middle East and Africa division has sold 49% of Dimension Data Tanzania to Tanzania-based WiA Group.
This will result in a partnership in line with the company's African strategy of local empowerment through local ownership.
The stake was sold for an undisclosed amount.
WiA Group is the majority shareholder in Tanzanian Internet service provider WiA. It provides a range of connectivity services, including wireless broadband, Web hosting, VOIP, e-business and e-mail services to the Tanzanian market, specifically in Dar es Salaam.
WiA Group CEO Eric Mwenda says companies need scale and capacity to deliver on the growing demand for ICT in the Tanzanian market. “The partnership with Dimension Data gives us access to an enormous pool of IT skills and talent, ICT worldwide best practices, and the opportunity to further invest in our technological capabilities.”
Mwenda says the deal will aid Tanzania in becoming an “active participant in the information economy”. Dimension Data Tanzania offers solutions that include network integration, converged communications, Microsoft solutions, security, as well as data centres and storage.
Dimension Data Tanzania GM Neda Smith notes the partnership will “ensure national and international businesses, as well as government and public sector agencies, have access to and benefit from an integrated range of modern, reliable and affordable ICT solutions and services”.
Smith says the partnership “reflects the company's commitment to economic empowerment through local ownership”.
The transaction is subject to the approval of Tanzanian regulatory authorities.
