Cellular network operator Vodacom grew its revenue by 24.6% to R34 billion, while profit from operations was 36.9% up at R8.9 billion in its financial year to 31 March.

Net after-tax profit rose 32% to R5.1 billion and cash generated from operations was 10.8% up at R11.1 billion.

Vodacom had a total subscriber base of 23.5 million at the end of March, it says.

This is an increase of two million subscribers, or 8.5%, since the end of December, when Vodacom`s total base stood at 21.5 million.

It also represents a 51.9% year-on-year increase.

Rival MTN counted about 24.2 million subscribers at the end of March, up 4% from 23.2 million at the end of December.

This morning Vodacom released key subscriber and financial data to the market ahead of next week`s detailed results presentation, as 50% shareholder Vodafone released its own results today.

CEO Alan Knott-Craig says detailed indicators per country and for the group will be presented on 5 June.

Vodacom`s other 50% shareholder, local fixed-line operator Telkom, will present its figures the same day.

UK-based Vodafone did not fare as well as its South African holdings, recording a full-year loss of ₤21.9 billion, compared with a ₤6.41 billion profit the previous year. This translates to a loss of 35.01p, compared with a year-earlier profit of 9.65p.

The loss is mainly the result of a write-down of assets.

"The carrying value of goodwill of the group`s mobile operations in Germany and Italy, with each representing a reportable segment, has been impaired due to Vodafone having revised its view of medium- to longer-term prospects for these businesses, given certain developments in the current market environment," Vodafone says in the commentary on its results.

Vodafone says in a strategy update that it is cutting more than 400 jobs at the corporate centre and cutting overheads. It is also planning to establish new revenue streams.

Telkom`s share was trading at R143.50 on the JSE early this morning, up 150c or 1.1% from yesterday`s close.
