Facebook users suffer viral surge

Facebook has been targeted by malicious hackers seeking to steal valuable data from members, reports the BBC.

The social network site has been hit by five separate security problems in the last seven days, say security experts.

By creating fake messages padded with details of Facebook members, the thieves are capitalising on the trust and social links that drive the network.

Green light for faster broadband

BT has received approval to begin its roll-out of super-fast broadband, reports the BBC.

Ofcom has delivered its long-awaited ruling which offers BT more flexibility in the way it delivers fibre networks. BT made clear it only wanted to make the move if regulator Ofcom allowed a fair return on that investment.

The regulator said its ruling was a "pivotal" one for the development of broadband, which it said would "be crucial" to the economy.

Bill Gates bans kids from iPhone

Bill Gates will not allow his three children, Jennifer, Rory and Phoebe, to have an iPod or iPhone, says The Register.

In an article about Mrs Gates, Vogue quotes Melinda as saying: "There are very few things that are on the banned list in our household... But iPods and iPhones are two things we don't get for our kids.

"Harsh, perhaps, but understandable. After all, it's hard to walk around tethered to merchandise made by your father's most famous competitor."

Barclays rolls out contactless payment

All Barclays customers are to start receiving Visa debit cards with contactless technology built in to allow purchases worth less than £10, reports Computing.co.uk.

With the “touch and go” technology, UK consumers can hold the card up to a reader to buy goods without the need to enter their PIN code.

According to the bank, contactless will be "a standard feature of most new and replacement debit cards”.
