Soccer's world governing body is looking to attract IT skills in its drive to recruit about 5 000 volunteers for the 2009 Confederations Cup, generally considered to be the dry run for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
In a process taking place mainly online, Fifa is calling for IT professionals with hardware, software and telecoms experience to give their time - free - during the sporting event.
The event's organisers say volunteers are an integral part of mega sports events the world over, be it the Olympics, or the World Cup. They say a volunteer programme is the only platform that provides an opportunity for mass participation in organising and delivering such an event.
The volunteer programme for the 2010 World Cup is not yet open. However, for the Confederations Cup, Fifa needs IT specialists with skills in hardware (setting up PCs), software (installing Windows and the like), as well as telecommunications and telecoms networks (mobile networks, subscriber interfaces, SIM cards, etc).
A good command of English, good communication skills, and a customer-friendly demeanour are required.
In the media field, volunteers, particularly those able to deal with ICT issues, are required to facilitate the work of journalists in the media centres in each stadium.
Applications for volunteer positions are open until the end of August. The Gauteng government also has a list of physical access centres for volunteer applications available online.
