Apple's notebook shares rise

Data from one market research firm shows Apple's notebook business broke 17% while another research firm said Apple has moved into third place among computer makers, reports cpilive.net.

According to NPD, Apple's retail notebook market share for June 2007 was 17.6%, a 2.2% increase over the same period last year when Apple posted a 15.4% market share.

Apple's continued rise in computer sales puts it in third place overall among all computer makers, research firm IDC says. This is the first time since 1996 that Apple finds itself this high on the list of top selling manufacturers.

Notebook users at risk

A worldwide survey of 1 600 corporate computer users shows that mobile users are more likely to send confidential information via instant messaging and e-mail, says Information Week.

In the US, 58% of mobile laptop users, those with Internet access outside company networks, said they sent confidential information by e-mail; by comparison, just 42% of users connecting via company networks said they sent confidential data via e-mail.

About 77% of US mobile workers received spam at work, versus 68% for users utilising company networks. The figures for the receipt of phishing attacks were 41% for mobile workers and 31% for desktop computer users.

Linux preloaded on SME PCs

US-based PC giant Hewlett-Packard will begin offering Linux preloaded on one of its desktop PC ranges in the Australian market, reports Techlogg.com.

The company will offer Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop preloaded on its new HP dx2250 desktop PC with an eye to growing its share of the small to medium enterprise (SME) market.

The HP Compaq dx2250 desktop PC is a range of systems under the one banner offering AMD processor technology based on Sempron, Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2 chips.
