Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa handed over GautengOnline ICT laboratories to 67 schools at the weekend, in line with plans to roll-out ICT facilities to 1 100 schools by the end of this month.
Shilowa officially handed over the labs, which included 1 645 PCs and a server, DVD equipment, VCR and television for each school, at a Decade of Freedom and Democracy celebration at Eldorado Park Stadium yesterday.
The latest roll-out will benefit 70 000 pupils at schools in Eldorado Park, Lenasia and Orange Farm.
The GautengOnline project aims to give every child in Gauteng access to a computer and an e-mail address by the year 2006. Earlier this year, Gauteng MEC for education Ignatius Jacobs said the project was on track, albeit with a "very tight schedule".
