Bluetooth bites

After numerous false starts, it seems Bluetooth is tipped to start enjoying some real growth, with research group International Data Corporation (IDC) predicting that 2003 is the year the technology will really take off. A recent IDC report suggests that within the next year, the wireless communications technology will become a "check list" item in everything from cellphones, to handheld devices and notebooks. Predicting that the Bluetooth market will grow to $2.6 billion in 2006, up from $76.6 million last year, IDC says the real winner in this "blue" market will be cellphones, expected to account for more than 50% of Bluetooth revenues.

Web service standards

Web services are inching towards fruition with the Worldwide Web Consortium yesterday releasing the public drafts of the Web Services Descriptor Language (WSDL) 1.2. The XML-based language describes Web services, including the protocol to use and its location. In a related report from IDC, WSDL was highlighted as one of the key issues underpinning the success of Web services, along with application server support for SOAP. Announcing the release of WSDL 1.2, the consortium said the new standard includes better component definition while removing unnecessary and non-interoperable features from the earlier WSDL 1.1.
