Motorola has signed a multimillion-rand network optimisation service contract with MTN Nigeria, assisting the mobile provider to improve the performance of its network.
The contract was signed at the end of March, says Eric Pradier, Motorola's home and networks mobility VP for the Europe, Middle East and Africa operations.
Motorola began implementing the service for MTN Nigeria at the end of the first quarter and will continue to optimise the network for the next three years, he says.
This is the first time the companies have signed a network optimisation contract, he says.
According to Pradier, Motorola's network optimisation tools will assist MTN Nigeria with tasks such as frequency planning, hardware optimisation, traffic and layer management, coverage design and capacity planning.
The tools also use real subscriber data to ensure the improvements it makes on the network directly impact on the operator's subscriber, he says.
"The subscriber will typically benefit from increased coverage, a better signal, improved call quality and less dropped calls," he says.
The enhanced network will also help MTN "flourish" in the highly competitive Nigerian market, says Olasoji Obanewa, MTN Nigerian planning and optimisation senior manager.
