Communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has assumed the office of the presidency.
Matsepe-Casaburri will hold the post in an acting capacity until deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka returns from China on Thursday.
President Thabo Mbeki is in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Mlambo-Ngcuka has been co-chairing the third session of the SA-China bi-national commission.
Government news agency BuaNews says Matsepe-Casaburri was sworn in alongside social development minister Zola Skweyiya, health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang and finance minister Trevor Manuel in 2005.
