Indian IT services provider Satyam Computer Services has established a presence in Egypt as part of its African expansion programme. This is according to Virender Aggarwal, director and senior VP of Satyam's Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa operations.
The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian government to build a global development centre (GDC) in Cairo.
The centre will accommodate about 300 resources over the next two years. It will serve as a technological development and software support facility for Satyam's Middle East and North Africa (MENA) customers, he says.
Aggarwal notes the government of Egypt encouraged the establishment of the GDC, which makes the country an appealing place to invest.
"Satyam is the first Indian company to establish its presence in Egypt and, with this move, the company plans to tap further into African and Middle East markets."
Satyam is hoping to set up a GDC in SA in the not too distant future. "We are looking to Africa as it is proving to be one of the fastest growing ICT economies at this stage."
In the past year, Satyam has also been engaged in several niche areas such as IT strategy consulting, quality consulting, data warehousing and business intelligence with various organisations across the MENA region, as well as in SA.
Satyam has opened regional offices in Johannesburg, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Al Khobar, says Aggarwal. "The regional offices have added significant value due to proximity to their customers."
Satyam's revenue increased by 70% in the MENA region in the past year, he adds.
