The International Computers Drivers Licence (ICDL) Foundation of SA was announced as the global winner of the Social Contribution Award at this year's European Computer Driver's Licence (ECDL) Foundation Licensee Awards.
The awards were held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, earlier this month according to an ECDL press statement.
The award was presented to the ICDL Foundation of SA in recognition of its work with the Namibian Ministry of Education, says Peter Davies, director of the ICDL Foundation of SA. The alliance has created a programme called Tech/Na, which will enable teachers and students in Namibia to gain their ICDL, he says.
"We are still in the process of training and certifying teachers with the ICDL," says Davies. He believes the ICDL certification will cover 200 Namibian schools by 2007.
This initiative has attracted backup and support from 50 different companies, government departments and NGOs in Namibia, he says.
The award for social contribution was designed to showcase programme roll-outs that demonstrate the capacity of the ECDL/ICDL to add value and make a difference to society and/or the lives of individuals, according to the statement.
In addition to the Social Contribution Award, six other licensee awards were presented at the ceremony.
These awards were established to reward excellence and leadership among the ECDL and ICDL licensees that deliver the ECDL Foundation range of computer skills certifications at a national level in 146 countries around the world.
