Nokia embraces consumer Net service

Helsinki, Finland, 04 Oct 2006

Nokia is looking beyond mobile telecommunications as it aims to gain a competitive advantage within the convergence space, says VP of corporate strategy Jarkko Sairanen.

Speaking at a media briefing in Helsinki, Finland, yesterday, Sairanen said Nokia has clear aspirations to remain a growth company, and is aggressively pursuing a strategy to bring customer-focused products to the market.

The company, he explained, is positioning to offer "differing things to different people". This approach takes into account geographical and consumer diversity, and their different needs.

The evolution of the computer was the paradigm driving the mobile telecoms market. However, the industry has repeatedly underestimated this technology development, Sairanen stated. He added that the next step in Nokia`s development would be to embrace consumer Internet services.

The mobile phone, he said, is fast becoming a "multimedia computer", which should give people Internet access anywhere, anytime.

"This is changing the way people work and the mobile phone will eventually replace the desktop PC."

Sairanen added that Nokia is also eager to cash in on the opportunities presented by new Internet trends, such as social networking, driven by such sites as the popular MySpace.

As a result, the company will focus on bringing to market products that are based on application categories, with focus areas that include music, photo and video, TV and media-to-go, Internet, computing and navigation, and gaming.

However, Sairanen stressed that this does not mean Nokia would turn away from offering low-end products, such as entry-level phones. There are 200 million multimedia computer phones, which means this market segment is relatively small. At the same time, Sairanen said, there are about 650 million corporate e-mail addresses worldwide, and only 1% or 2% are mobile, meaning that great opportunities exist in this space as well.

"Thus our portfolio must include products that include simplicity, as well as high-end technology," he stated. Simplicity, he said, is not restricted to entry-level handsets, but will also be a feature of application category phones. For example, certain focused products will include dedicated music keys.

"We have taken a very human approach to technology. We are working hard to expand and improve the human experience."
