Marconi human resources director Thabo Mpama was elected the new chairman of the Information Systems, Electronics and Telecommunications Technologies (ISETT) SETA, at the SETA`s annual general meeting in Sandton.

Innocentius Makola, who was acting chairman for the past few months, was named deputy chairman.

A new board was elected during the AGM and changes were made to the SETA`s constitution, to bring the organisation in line with a new strategy to improve communication with stakeholders.

In an annual report tabled at the AGM, CEO Mateli Mpuntsha said the SETA had made considerable progress in the past year, with a 250% increase in participation by employers in the Skills Development Framework. Where additional funds were available in the first financial year, the SETA had carried out Maths and Science training projects in the KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces.

Mpuntsha also said that Education Training Quality Assurance had now been achieved, resulting in the SETA being able to begin with the approval of training providers. He said eight learnerships were registered by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

He envisages far closer cooperation with stakeholders in the industry this year, as a result of targeted communications exercises.
