Line matrix still the best print option

Line matrix printing allows for printing on different materials, form factors, and sizes, says Frikkie Koegelenberg, CCO of PDC.

Johannesburg, 16 Mar 2016

Line matrix printing has been around for 42 years, and remains the best technology for high volume, mission-critical printing, according to Frikkie Koegelenberg, CCO of PDC. "Line matrix offers the lowest total cost of ownership and the lowest per page cost across all print technologies. It's a fraction of the cost of laser printing, and has the longest life span."

Its reliability has made line matrix printing the mainstay of many businesses, and because it allows for printing on different materials, form factors, and sizes, it has remained relevant for modern printing applications. Manufacturers of the technology have therefore continually advanced their printers, adding innovations to meet the needs of today's companies.

Koegelenberg explains these are a few of the reasons that Printronix has continued to update its ranges of line printers, ensuring that businesses across the continent can access the right printer for their requirements - and budget. "We stock line matrix printers from the world's best manufacturer, namely Printronix, which includes the TallyGenicom brand."

He cites features such as modular enclosures that allow the printers to occupy a smaller footprint while delivering location and installation flexibility, as well as remote printer diagnostics, to allow users to monitor printer status and remotely configure settings and firmware. "For example, TallyGenicom's 6800 Cartridge series is the ideal solution for businesses looking to minimise operating expense without sacrificing output reliability. Similarly, Printronix has introduced design enhancements and improved functionality with the P8000 series. The P8000 adapts to almost any supply-chain or back-office environment, and boasts features such as USB 2.0 and serial connectivity as standard."

The flagship model in the TallyGenicom range, the 6800 Open Pedestal, is compact in size, making it easy to move around. Printronix's P8000 Zero Tear is a specialised cartridge line matrix printer choice for businesses using pre-printed and serialised documents that require print on demand, single form tear-off usability. The Zero Tear is designed to eliminate wasted forms and reduce operating costs, while the 6800 Enclosed Pedestal printer offers a quiet, versatile, dependable, pedestal-style printer for use in an office with space limitations.

Both the P8000 and TG6800 boast a number of enhanced features, including the selection of multiple preloaded emulations and graphic options from the control panel, as well as TG Standard Emulations for the P6805, C6805, P6810, C6810, C6815 and C6820 models. In addition, Ethernet and Parallel port interfaces have been included over and above the standard RS 232 Serial and USB interfaces.

Koegelenberg adds that a variety of independent software vendors provide label design software and ERP solutions that natively support the manufacturer's products for graphics, text and bar code images. "Add to this the fact that line matrix printers perform reliably in non-climate controlled environments where temperature, humidity and airborne contaminants cause form feeding and print quality issues for other print technologies, and there's no question that this technology is easier to operate and support than many others, including laser. With lower maintenance costs, higher ribbon yield, and less downtime, line matrix printers are the way to go for any company looking for reliability and performance at a reasonable price," he says.

"All of the enhancements on the new ranges have prompted a number of existing Printronix and TallyGenicom users to look at upgrading, and we have therefore designed a trade-in programme for the purchase of the Printronix P8000 or TallyGenicom 6800 printers. The trade-in value will be dependent on the speed of the new printer, with a higher trade-in value for purchases of the new printer with a Printronix warranty extension. This programme will be available until 25 March 2016."
