Two budding South African tech entrepreneurs, Tyler Hoffman and Unathi Chonco, have created an app that draws together all Gauteng public transport information into one easy-to-navigate app.

The pair, currently based in Silicon Valley, are former University of Pretoria students. They are part of the Make School programme in San Francisco. Make School is a two-year course that aims to empower students to build and ship tech products, with the hope that these products improve lives.

The app, Transit Wise, is a product of the Make School initiative.

It works by combining many public transport services throughout Gauteng into one app to give users routes for short local trips and longer intercity travel. The app visually maps out journeys for the user, and provides information on arrival and departure times, trip duration and costs.

Hoffman and Chonco hope to make it available to the rest of SA soon.

"I hope that we can bring a major reform to public transport as we know it, because these systems can be really useful if maintained and used properly," says Chonco.

Transport agencies that support Transit Wise include A Re Yeng, Gautrain, Metrobus, Metrorail, Rea Vaya, and the Tshwane Bus Service.

Transit Wise is available as a free download from the Apple App Store.
